Are you are new to Vermont? You are probably in the process of switching over your insurance policies. While some types will transfer instantly, others may require you to find a new agency. Health insurance, for instance, may not move from state to state. Before looking for a Vermont health insurance company to purchase health coverage from, you should learn what your options are.

For people who like to have their choice of physicians, an indemnity plan may be the best fit. These are often the most costly choice. You are usually required to pay out of pocket for a doctor’s appointment and request a refund from your insurance company.

With a preferred provider organization policy, you are given a list of approved facilities. While you can choose a doctor that is not on the list, you can save a lot of money by staying within the network. A co-payment is usually required.

Health maintenance organization plans are similar to PPO plans, except for the fact that your insurance will not pay for anyone not on the network list. You also cannot see a specialist, such as an OBGYN, without a referral.

Also very similar to PPOs, point of service policies allow you to go to any doctor, but you will not be fully reimbursed for the cost of the appointment. You may also have to pay a deductible along with your co-payment.
